KINGS CANYON
After our walk at the Olgas we hit the road and headed to
Kings Canyon. We called ahead to tried
to book a powered site however we were told they were booked out and didn’t
take bookings for unpowered sites and it was first in best dressed. Because we had spent the morning at the Olgas
we didn’t get to Kings Canyon until 5.30 and this meant the unpowered section
was packed. We ended up just propping
the van wherever we could find room.
With that many people there, unfortunately the toilets were a mess.
To Paige’s delight the next morning we had bacon and
eggs. She sat there patiently watching
Brad cook it. Then headed off to walk
Kings Canyon.
There are two options for walks, the Creek walk and the Rim
walk. We proceeded to attack the Rim
Walk. The start of the walk is a steep,
500 step climb up the Canyon. The view
at the top is well worth the effort.
The Rim walk went right around the edge of the Canyon and
then down to the Garden of Eden, then back up the other side. Breathtaking scenery and rock formations (it
felt like being in a Road Runner cartoon).
The walk was well set up, plenty of information boards about the
geology, markers to keep you on track and not overly restrictive with the
ability to walk up to the edges of the cliffs (if you were game). It was amazing to see tress growing straight
out of the rock.
Again the kids were fantastic, until in the last stretch
Paige fell and scrapped her knee, but powered though to complete the 7kms hike.
I was suckered in by the girls again and took them to the pool for a swim and again they lasted 5 minutes as the water was freezing. As the sunset, Brad and I walked to the Sunset viewing platform, where there was a temporary bar set up, and watched the sunset on our time at Kings Canyon.
